The UC Irvine Education Institute has been certified as a Level I Education Center by the American College of Surgeons since 2003. Located in Southern California in the cities of Orange and Irvine, the UC Irvine Education Institute is comprised of our Orange Education Center and Irvine Education Center. The Orange Education Center includes the Surgical Education Center (SEC) and Fresh Tissue Teaching Laboratory (FTTL). The Irvine Education Center includes the Medical Education Simulation Center (MedEd). Since 2003, more than 25,000 learners have participated in this institute’s surgical training programs.
This institute is continuously used by UC Irvine surgical and clinical departments and/or divisions, faculty, residents, medical students, community and international surgeons, as well as allied health professionals.
The Orange Education Center is where surgical procedures and skills are taught. Educational activities include a full range of hands-on surgical courses including endoscopic and arthroscopic, minimally invasive and open procedures, development of innovative surgical technologies and products, translational and in-vivo studies, prototype testing, company sales team training, and community outreach.
The Irvine Education Center is where undergraduate medical education and testing, residency simulation and testing, interdisciplinary team training, crisis resource management, and outreach occur. Educational activities include a full range of high-low fidelity medical simulation and procedural skills training. Although the priority is placed upon the undergraduate medical education, the medical Education Simulation Center also provides an array of educational opportunities and services that include Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesia© (MOCA©) continuing medical education courses, Heartcode® Basic Life Support, and Advanced Cardiac Life Support. Space is also provided for in-house human performance and/or simulation-related research as well as provides a platform for external third party research requests. The center hosts a Simulation Instructor Training Course (SITC) 1-2 times a year that has been given accolades and has included learners from the United States, Canada, France, and Hong Kong. The Medical Education Simulation Center has the capability to transmit medical simulation sessions to other medical facilities. In fact, in the spring of 2015, the Medical Education Simulation Center organized and conducted a joint tele-simulation with Lyon, France that paired residents from each country to discuss patient care, clinical management, and discuss the principles of crisis resource management.
The Surgical Education Center is an American College of Surgeons Level I Comprehensive Accredited Education Institute.
